The Restoration Process --

Getting to the bottom of things, or, how to flip a boat in a parking lot

How do you turn a boat over to work on the bottom? Well, you need a little help from a crane, and some careful strapping.

Here, we see "Tuxedo Taxi," mid-way through her restoration, being turned over -- after replacing her mahogany side planks, Runabout Reflections also replaced her bottom hull, plank by plank.

Here, the boat is almost flipped over -- next, the "cradle," with its castor wheels, will be rolled underneath, and she will be lowered onto it to begin the restoration of her bottom planks.

The process of "flipping" the boat attracted attention from nearby merchants, who could see activity taking place in the parking lot at the warehouse complex where Runabout Reflections is located. Roy Domke reports that on the day these pictures were taken of "Tuxedo Taxi" being turned, the nearby Dunn-Edwards paint store cleared-out to watch the "arial ballet" taking place across the street. The owner of the store commented that his store had been "evacuated," as everyone watched the boat-turning, enthralled.
